54th IASA Conference & 4th ICTM Forum

Collaborating to preserve and safeguard audiovisual and related heritage

Dear Friends and Business Partners,

The International Association of Sound and Audiovisual Archives (IASA) and International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM) invite you to participate in a joint event to be held from 11-15 September, 2023 at the Istanbul University in Istanbul, Türkiye.

This joint event comprises the 54th IASA Annual Conference and the 4th ICTM Forum in which, for the first time, ICTM and IASA join forces in a shared scholarly gathering. It promises to be a wonderful opportunity for collaboration between the organisations and their many shared interests.

On the 12th of September at 3:00-3:30 PM Tom Lorenz (Cube-Tec) and Hinnerk Gehrckens (DRA) will hold a joint presentation of the paper: Comparative measurement of earlier digitized versions with newly created digital copies from the same analog sound carrier

Abstract:
For more than 25 years, sound archives have been digitizing their analog sound carriers on a massive scale. The primary objective has been to create new digital masters that can replace the analog carriers. Over the years, many archives have continually adapted and improved their quality management throughout the digitization process. However, many sound archives are now facing significant cost pressures and it's not just broadcast archives that are planning to dispose of at least parts of their analog holdings. But with such large volumes, how can it be ensured that migrated sound carriers of inferior quality are detected before the analog carriers are removed from the holdings? Can a higher-quality digital reproduction be created from an audio carrier that has since aged further, and is this still possible without expert treatment? How can new technologies efficiently solve this challenge and reduce the subjective aspect? The paper outlines the procedure used by the Deutsches Rundfunkarchiv for the examination and comparative measurement of earlier digitized versions with newly created digital copies of the same content.
