INSPECTIONscan for the Archive of Social Democracy

„A year ago at Christmas time, I received a newsletter from Cube-Tec with a short description of their new Inspection Scanner. I had already seen an earlier version at the IASA conference in Hilversum and found the idea and realization exciting and well done. After almost exactly one year of product demonstrations, presentations and a public tender process, we now have a new INSPECTIONscan.one in our archive”, remembers Alexander Boix, responsible officer for the film, video and sound collection of the Archiv der sozialen Demokratie of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Bonn, Germany.

Without a red ribbon, but almost like a nice ‘Christmas present’, the INSPECTIONscan was handed over to the archive in Bonn by the employees of Cube-Tec on December 8th, 2021.

After a short introduction, Alexander Boix and his colleague Ralf Gräf were already familiar with the handling of the system and they were able to load the first film rolls themselves. Everything was tested, be it 16mm or 35mm cine film, optical or magnetic soundtrack, or operation with a 'fullcoat' magnetic film – and everything behaved as expected.

The next day, another training session followed, this time focusing on reporting and practical questions, e.g. which reporting parameters the sensor system in INSPECTIONscan can document independently and which descriptive information can additionally be entered manually to enhance the report. This is a wide field and INSPECTIONscan offers many possibilities here. The system can be easily adapted to individual requirements for this purpose.

It is impressive to see that a multi-page report is generated in addition to each access file. It makes the job so much easier to log automatically conspicuous findings on the film material, such as bad splices and perforation defects, in the inspection report and to provide photographic evidence of these.

The inspection report is created completely without manual intervention. Nevertheless, the report can also be complemented very easily with individual findings and comments.

As a conclusion from the first weeks with the new QUADRIGA INSPECTIONscan, Alexander Boix summarizes:

The INSPECTIONscan represents an important expansion for our technical infrastructure, which allows us not only to make the contents of our film collection usable in digital form without great effort, but at the same time also allows a well-founded technical diagnosis, which serves as a basis for the selection of suitable film elements for the creation of high-quality digital master copies.”
