At the 2014 FKTG Symposium in Cologne the companies IBM, Rohde & Schwarz, Cube-Tec and Dimetis together showcase how to implement flexible media production and distribution. FIMS - the Framework for Interoperable Media Services - is the open standard for media services.

After succeeding crucial tests, the time is right for real product integration. Encapsulated into FIMS services inter-company workflows are made easy even with specialised modules for format conversion, QC, automatic MXF file repair or proxy file generation. In relation to FIMS, CubeWorkflow is especially flexible; it is able to orchestrate FIMS workflows. In addition CubeWorkflow QC sub-system can be called as a FIMS service by MAM systems, too.

The live demo showcased a workflow orchestrated by IBM AREMA and Dimetis BOSS File Transfer Manager calling Cube-Tec QC functions as FIMS services. In another sub-process, CubeWorkflow itself calls the VENICE Media Hub by Rohde & Schwarz / DVS as a FIMS service to run format conversions.

FIMS is a royalty-free, open, easily scalable media technology, providing standardised interfaces for the automation of media processes. The open FIMS standardisation process is administered by EBU and AMWA (Advanced Media Workflow Association) and has broad support from the industry and the SMPTE. Leading media business systems already use FIMS today.

Cube-Tec’s CTO Jörg Houpert is active in the standardisation of FIMS for many years. During the conference, Jörg gave a short introduction on the current progress on FIMS standardisation work and an outlook what is to be expected in the near future. Tom Lorenz presented a client project of topical interest: "Automation of top and tail editing of broadcast audio files for play-out". The expert talk explained how human operator driven media processes can be transferred into intelligent software automation.
