ARRI Archive Workshop 2012
ARRI's third annual archive and restoration workshop in Munich has come to a close and was, once again, a great success.
Professionals from all areas of the restoration industry and all corners of the globe attended the event, coming together to share their experiences preserving delicate film materials for future generations. More than just a technology forum, the workshop encouraged debate on the complex ethical issues of image restoration, such as the degree to which DI techniques should be used to restore missing or damaged elements.
In a joint aural presentation between DVS and Cube-Tec Jürgen BURGHARDT (Cube-Tec International) and Michael BAUER (DVS Digital Video Systems) presented:
Media long-term archiving using JPEG 2000 and LTFS
Complexity in most areas of media production is exploding. To stay successful, organisations need to increase their rate of business automation and process surveillance fast enough. But most of the repetitive straight forward tasks are already automated. The next step is to automate interactive processes and processes requiring a good slice of flexibility. For this, workflow engines and automatic rule engines are the method of choice. These tools need to be manageable straight forward by media users without any scripting tools or support of IT experts.
More and more automation tasks need to span over different product areas, requiring solutions with inter-company collaboration and open standards interfaces. To show concrete examples, the presentation will focus on an area which affects almost all media producers. How can I manage the immense increase of media data? How to archive content reliably without being occupied by the data supervision and data migration process? Practical examples showing JPEG 2000 compression and LTO-5 data tape storage using the LTFS file system will be presented.
